Chennai, originally known as Madras patname was found in Tondaimandalam province, an area between the river of Nellore and Penna Penna river of Cuddalore. The capital of the province was Kancheepuram. Tondaimandalam was carried out in the second century AD by Tondaiman Tiraiyan Ilam, who was a representative of the Chola family at Kanchipuram. It is believed that should undergo Ilam Tiraiyan Kurumba, the first inhabitants of the region and established his dominion over Tondaimandalam.

The Vijayanagar rulers appointed chief called Nayaks who ruled the various regions of the province near independently.Damarla Venkatapathy Nayak, an influential leader in Venkata III, who was in charge of the area of present Chennai city, gave a grant of a plot of land between the river Cooum almost to the point where it enters the sea and another river called the river Egmore English in 1639. In this wasteland was founded in Fort St. George just for commercial reasons.
